SODIUM METASILICATE PENTAHYDRATE
Sodium metasilicate is a chemical substance with the formula Na
2SiO
3, which is the main component of commercial sodium silicate solution. It is an ionic compound consisting of sodium cations Na +
and polymeric metasilicate anion (–SiO2−
3–] n. It is a hygroscopic and deliquescent solid crystal that is colorless, soluble in water (giving an alkaline solution), but not in alcohol. [1]
Uses
Sodium Metasilicate reacts with acid to give silica gel. [6]
Cements and Binders - dehydrates sodium metasilicate to form cement or binder.
Pulp and Par-sizing agent and buffer / stabilizer when mixed with hydrogen peroxide.
Soaps and Detergents - as emulsifying and suspension agents.
Automotive applications - legacy engine decommissioning (CARS program), cooling system sealants, exhaust repair.
Egg Preservative - seals the eggs thereby increasing their shelf life.
Crafting - forms "stalagmites" by reacting and precipitating metal ions. Also used as a glue called "dissolved glass"
