. This compound is a strong oxidizing agent. It dissolves in water to give an intense pink or purple solution, evaporation of this solution leaving prismatic crystals of a purplish-black color. [3] In 2000, worldwide production was estimated at 30,000 tonnes. [4] In this compound, manganese has an oxidation number of +7.
Usage [edit | edit source]
Nearly all applications of potassium permanganate take advantage of its oxidizing properties. [4] As a strong oxidant that does not produce toxic by-products, KMnO4 has many uses.
Antiseptic [edit] edit source]
As an oxidant, potassium permanganate can act as an antiseptic. For example, aqueous solutions of these compounds are used to treat thrush (inflammation), disinfectants for hands and treatment for pomfoliks, dermatitis, [10] [11] and fungal infections of the hands or feet of a mild nature. [12]
Water treatment [edit | edit source]
Potassium permanganate is used extensively in the water treatment industry. It is used as a regeneration chemical to remove iron and hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor) from well water through the "Manganese Greensand" Filter. "Pot-Perm" can also be obtained at pool supply stores and used as an adjunct to treat wastewater. Historically it was used to sterilize drinking water. [13] [14] Currently this compound is finding its application in the control of pests such as zebra clams in the collection and processing of freshwater systems. [15]
